"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses his saltiness, how can it be made salty again?" - Matthew 5:13
Christ quoted this during His time of ministry. If you take a moment to stop and truly think about what this means, we can then come to the realization of why HE chose salt above anything else.
Why is salt so significant to us? For starters, our body consist of 0.4 percent of salt! It is a necessity to the functioning of our bodies and we could not live with out it. Salt is responsible for regulating our blood volume and blood pressure. It aides in digestion, helps maintain our bodily fluids, and transmits our nerve impulses. Sounds very important, doesn't it?
So why then would Christ say that HIS followers are the salt of the earth? What is the analogy between this very important mineral to HIS disciples?
We can better understand the answer when looking at 1 Peter 2:9:
"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for HIS own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of HIM who called you out of darkness into the marvelous light."
His disciples were chosen and handpicked to be one of HIS true followers. We are called out to be seperated from the rest of the world to proclaim HIS name throughout the entire world!
The called out ones are given the greatest opportunity ever known to man. A chance to be apart of a royal family in the KINGDOM OF GOD. We are truly branded in this world. We as the salt, sit in a pot of sand. Each grain of sand is like the other, but sprinkled throughout these grains are tasteful white specks of salt. What an example that is for a TRUE follower to stand out like intended to.
Christ stated this to remind us that we are HIS called out ones. We are to be like him and be different. To be the outcast and proclaim HIS wonderful works.
But what does the second half of Matthew 5:13 mean? Christ is warning us to not lose our flavoring.
When you grab the salt shaker and start to season your food, you can see the grains of salt start to scatter among your food. That is pretty much how Gods people are scattered throughout the world! Since one grain of salt can be standing alone at times, it becomes one small light in the midst of the darkness. It can become a trying task to remain lit at all times with the influences of the darkness overpowering. So Christ is warning us to not let this happen. Just as it would be hard for a grain of salt to regain its saltiness after losing its flavor, so will a follower of Christ have trouble finding its way again. Don't be the one that loses it's way, but cling on to HIM that will give us all eternal life.
